While many New Yorkers know DJ Whutever for being a DJ for both Power 105 and the New York Mets, not many people know that organ donation is an issue close to his heart. This Donate Life Month he is sharing his family’s story in hopes of inspiring New Yorkers to sign up as lifesaving organ donors.

There are approximately 10,000 New Yorkers currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. For a long time, one of those New Yorkers was DJ Whutever’s mother, Pearl. The Bronx native was a young boy when his mother was put on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. She was forced to go to dialysis treatment three days a week while working full time, raising a young son, and going to school to get her bachelor’s degree. Through it all she never gave up hope and she put on a brave face for her son.

Thankfully, Pearl’s brother volunteered to be a living kidney donor. The pair went through many tests and soon found out they were a match. The transplant was a success. It is because of his selfless act that Pearl has been able to watch her son grow up to be a successful DJ.

DJ Whutever says his mom’s bravery in the face of struggle was an inspiration. She persevered through major life challenges and taught him to do the same. In honor of Pearl, DJ Whutever is encouraging his listeners and all New Yorkers to educate themselves and their families about the power of organ donation.

“I think organ donation is extremely important,” he says. “It’s all about helping people survive and helping people live.”
